This years election was a swift kick in the nuts to the ideal of American Democracy. Since trump has always had a dim view of what this country stands for, he has willingly put in place an agenda that would destroy institutions that have been in place since the country first broke free from British tyranny. We now have tyranny of our own. It doesn't help that the lack of an educated populace continue to vote against their own interests in favor of a more fascist and fervently racist policy agenda supported by MAGA extremists and right-wing republican politicians.
What MAGA doesn't realize, because of their willful ignorance, is that in trying to "own" the libs, they also stand to possibly lose their rights, as well as, healthcare, fair housing, social security, reproductive rights, and human rights protections. Trans and LGBQT people will now have to reside in the shadows of mainstream society to keep from being discriminated against openly. And let's not forget the thousands of immigrants trump plans to send to prison camps until they could be deported before they finish "poisoning" the blood of America.
While none of this is bides well for democracy or the institutions the founding fathers envisioned, the ones supporting these agendas have no grounding in history and are blindly following a cult of personality that at once wants to create a new world order while destroying the norms that allowed America to navigate world conflicts in a politically unstable world and be the shining light to the world. They also do not know what authoritarianism is or how it works. Germans in 1933 helped elect a dictator into office and, in the end, brought Germany to ruin. They did not realize the consequences of electing someone like Adolf Hitler. Sure, he remade Germany into an industrial giant with a robust economy and mighty military but the sad truth is that MAGA does not see or acknowledge the parallels and historical implications of electing into office, a grifting criminal rapist and narcissistic despot with the temperament of an insolent child. They're just happy to have someone lead the country who hates the same people they do.
We'll see what the shape of the country will be after the next four years, but I fear that if trump doesn't die while in office, he may never leave the White House and with the help of his cronies continue his reign of terror against citizens who speak out against him and his perceived enemies, real or imagined. Dark days are head, indeed.
